Jacksonville Zoo

On Friday we took a trip to the Jacksonville Zoo.  I was so disappointed when I learned that Savannah did not have a zoo since Grayson loves going to see the animals and it was an easy thing to do with him in the mornings when we lived in Arizona.  The nearest zoo is the Jacksonville Zoo in Florida and is about an hour and a half to two hours away.  We were staying on Jekyll Island which is about an hour and a half south of us for the long weekend so took advantage of being near Jacksonville and headed to the zoo.  The forecast called for rain all weekend, but we got lucky Friday morning with just clouds and the rain stayed away while we were there.  

The penguin exhibit at the zoo had a small area for kids to climb under and see the penguins swim above them.  They also fed the penguins so we stayed to watch that for a couple minutes before moving on to more animals.

There was also a play area, geared more toward older kids, and Grayson loved climbing around there!

It seems like every zoo has the chance to feed the giraffes so of course Grayson wanted to do that.  He was used to feeding carrots to the giraffes at the Tucson zoo so when this giraffe grabbed a leaf, he let go of his branch and it fell to the ground.  Will and I had to help him hang on to the end of it until the giraffe had a good hold on it.  There was even a 2 year old giraffe that came up to get a snack. :)  

It wasn't a huge zoo so we were able to get around to most of the animals in the morning before it was time for nap.  We figured out the drive wasn't too bad since the zoo is located on the north end near the airport.  Once Ryley gets a little bigger, I may end up taking the boys to the zoo for a day trip every once in awhile.  :)
